I'm losing more than saving!

When Daylight Saving Time ends I notice I'm more inclined to 'save' more time than when it begins. Does anyone feel the same way? Why do I say this? In the winter, since the days are shorter wouldn't 'falling back' besides returning that hour of sleep, also gives you a sense of urgency to get home because from that point on the sun will be setting just around 5pm?

Today when my son went to school I noticed how dark it was outside and I was thankful for this upcoming Sunday. Why? Because my son walks to school and as he was leaving for school it was still dark at 7:20AM. Starting on Monday he won't have to wake up as early or leave at dark. As a mom, especially with a teenage son, even if they are going to school I still worry. I shouldn't be too concerned though because my son is almost 6ft tall at 14, but a mother is a mother. That's him wearing a couple of banana's for a hat with a toy sword acting silly.

When Daylight Saving, not Savings Time ends it gives us more time to 'spend'. However you think that may be, I happen to believe DST is pointless. There are days when I will sleep an hour earlier, or an hour later, or even many hours later. And even still, there are those of us who wake up at 3AM and can't for some reason get back to bed. The society we live in thrives on fast pace and more time is invested in scheduling and trying to keep up. Just having to worry about all of this is the main reason people don't sleep, yet its said that in the long run it will benefit. There are even those who would prefer to not even have a 'lunch' break because of how busy we all seem to be. I think a lot of it is because we don't put enough time to relax because we spend more time always trying to be prepared. So people look forward to the DST ending during the holidays because you get back that extra hour, not out of laziness, but the need to rest more.

When DST was originally implemented, we were in a time where much of what you did was out of the house. You had to walk for miles, ride a horse or if you really wanted to go far, take a boat. And you needed more daylight to accomplish these things. Much of what I can do now like pay bills, shop, and even talk to people, I can do online or via phone. Telecommuting is also an option, so why do we still need it?

Colors represent countries that use DST in summer. Differences are related by hemisphere. The rest as of October 2011 have either never used DST or abolished it.

Abolish DST?

Another important thing to note is that this isn't something that is in our control or is it? Our government made this decision for us. There are countries that do not practice DST for a variety of reasons. But it appears in this age, what we need is a reason to continue DST.

Countries at this point can't be bothered with the idea of changing their clocks because it requires not only discipline but also the conviction that it would ultimately benefit their society. In our country there is an overabundance of discipline to the point that instead of abolishing it, George W. Bush changed the dates in 2005. There are many countries that have abolished DST this year alone. Notice in the color coded map how many countries are 'gray'. Some have never had DST and still others are in the works to end it. You can find these updates at worldtimezone.net.

In the United States Alaska attempted to ban the DST in 2010 because of its northern latitudes but was shot down. They have a history of being against the DST, but as you can see, it is out of their control. While the need to keep DST is still being argued, be it for energy issues, traffic decrease I think its time has come and gone.

This hub was designed to highlight the frustration that many people have with Daylight Saving Time and what the world is ultimately doing. I hope as I gather more information to continue to modify this hub to accomodate any errors made and I would appreciate your comments on the subject.

My conclusion on DST is that because we are accustomed to being told what to do, many people could argue but eventually nothing would be done because it is out of our hands. Or is it?

Thanks for reading! Happy Hubbing!

I'm glad that we don't have Daylight Savings Time in Arizona. If a business wants to "save time" why don't they just change their hours of operation in the summer?

I don't like Daylight Savings Time and neither does anyone else I know. All it seems to do is cause us to take about two weeks to adjust to the new time. We are disoriented and sometimes oversleep or lay awake for hours because it has thrown us off schedule and this happens twice a year. I say, leave the time alone. If kids are in danger going to school in the dark or coming home in the dark, then change the school hours instead!
